Salvation by Grace Through Faith By Marina Scofield, Volunteer Storyteller
About two years ago, Rebecka Joshua found herself desperately searching the pages of the bible for answers. She had reached a low point in her life, battling depression and addiction, and she was malnourished from an eating disorder. “It was a really bad time. But part of me still held on to hope - I just knew there was something else, something more to this life.”
It was in that low point of darkness that she vividly remembered specific prayers from her childhood. “I was so malnourished that I couldn't put words or thoughts together correctly, yet I was able to recite these prayers. I believe in my heart that everything had changed during that time. God heard my cry. It took an extreme amount of effort to dig myself out from the underground, but it’s all been uphill from there!” She’s had a few challenges and stumbles, but nothing like before. “Whatever hardships I face now, I know that I can overcome them with the help of Jesus. Seek him first, even if it doesn’t make sense right now, it will.”
She talks to God regularly and in the process learned to trust again. “Up until that point I was very untrusting. There were so many signs and experiences that led me back to Him. I finally stopped resisting, and I let Him guide me. All that pain that I went through was finally worth it. Everything started coming together, and I realized God was in everything and everything was about God. This was the end, I was done seeking!”
Rebecka made the wonderful decision to be baptized earlier this year. “I’ve overcome so much and I believe God brought me back to life in more ways than one. I thought I would die before I found my faith.” She is also discovering a new purpose, which is working with children, and she’s naturally suited for it. “God is placing me where I need to be. He uses all things for good. Nothing in your life will be wasted - even if you don’t see it yet!”
Rebecka offers advice to others struggling but seeking. “Follow the cues. Don’t listen to harsh, negative thoughts. Be discerning. I want people to pray that their faith gets stronger. Faith is the most important thing, that’s the key to the answer. Because God is Jesus!”
